Nature and Wildlife in Dimapur
Dimapur, the most important city in Nagaland, is a traveller's delight. Dimapur tourism is a whole package for the tourists. Dimapur has sancturies of the likes of Rangapahar Wildlife Sanctuary, Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary and parks like Geological park, Science park and Green park. The sanctuaries and parks located in Dimpaur are:
Rangapahar Wildlife Sanctuary
Dimapur is home to the Rangapahar Wildlife Sanctuary. It was established in 1986 and covers an area of 4.7 sq kms. This sanctuary is a home to many species of birds and animals.
Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary
Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at a distance of 37 km from Dimapur and 111 km from Kohima. It covers an area of 202 sq km. The Sanctuary is under the preservation of the Forest Wildlife Department. The landscape of the sanctuary is hilly and mountainous. The flora is surrounded by thick carpet of green plantations. The sanctuary is the home to many medicinal plants.
The sanctuary is home to some rare species of birds including kaleej, hornbill, common pheasant and black star. The sanctuary is home to a rich variety of wild animals. The primary attraction of the sanctuary is the hoolock gibbon. Animals including tigers, barking deer, Mithun, sambar, goral, flying squirrel, wild dog, sloth beer, elephants, hoolock gibbon, barking deer could be seen here. The best time to visit the sanctuary is during the time of November to February.
Zoological park
The Zoological park is located at a distance of 6 km from Dimapur town. The area of the park is 6 ha. It was inaugurated in 2008. The topography of the area is gentle rolling plateau with low lying area for aquatic birds.
Green park
Green park is located within the state horticulture nursery in Dimapur. As the name suggest is a green area in Dimapur. In Green park tourists can relax and hangout. There is a restaurant and boating facilities for tourists here.
Science park
Nagaland Science Center is the first of its kind in the state. It is set up behind the Naga Shopping Arcade. The centre has been set up to develop scientific temper in the society. In the centre there are different galleries viz, our senses, fun science, and children's corner. Besides this Taramandal, a uniquely designed inflatable dome planetarium makes one soar deep into the sky by the night. The centre remains open everyday except on Monday from 10 am to 4 pm.
